$4.7 million in grants to the Fishing Lake and Waldsea Lake communities will assist with flood protection for property that was damaged from high water levels during spring flooding in 2007.

In 1991, the federal government approved a First Nations Policing Policy.  In 1993, the federal and provincial governments and Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) entered into a Framework Agreement under this policy for the policing of First Nations in the province. Under the Agreement, First Nations may:
  • enter into individual Community Tripartite Policing Agreements (CTAs) with the RCMP;
  • create a stand-alone police force; or
  • create a developmental model where another force provides service with the First Nation moving to a "stand-alone" force over a period of time.

Since 1993, 34 CTAs and one First Nations self-administered police service have been established. More than 132 RCMP officers are involved in the CTAs.

First Nations with CTAs must have police management boards that provide advice to the RCMP about policing in the community. Training for police management boards is provided in partnership between the FSIN, Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing, the RCMP and the Aboriginal Policing Directorate of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada.
