Did You Know

To meet the government's commitment to fight organized crime in Saskatchewan, the 2008-09 Budget provides new funding for nine police officers who will focus on conducting investigations into street gangs.

As codes and standards have developed over the years, the level of technical knowledge required by building officials has steadily increased. To help local authorities appoint qualified people as their building officials, the province agreed to develop a licensing program for building officials. Since the licensing regulations were enacted, local authorities may appoint only licensed building officials.

Three primary classes of licences authorize holders to provide plan review, inspection and enforcement services on certain buildings: Class 1 - one and two unit dwellings; Class 2 - any buildings under the scope of Part 9 of the National Building Code including Class 1; Class 3 - any buildings under the scope of the National Building Code including Classes 1 and 2.

Building Standards staff receive and review applications for licences. Applicants must
provide information about their education, training and experience background, and provide evidence that they have passed the appropriate licensing examination. An advisory committee may help staff evaluate the applicants' backgrounds, and may advise on other matters related to administration of the regulations.

"A building official is an appointed government official who is responsible for enforcing building codes. The building official may approve the issuance of a building permit, review the contract documents, inspect the construction, and approve issuance of a certificate of occupancy."
