Building and Fire Safety Building Standards310 - 1855 Victoria Avenue Promoting Construction of Safe Buildings Saskatchewan adopts the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) as the basis for Saskatchewan's building and accessibility standards. These standards address fire safety, health safety, structural adequacy, and barrier-free accessibility requirements for all types of buildings. The standards apply to construction of new buildings and renovation, addition, moving, demolition, and occupancy of existing buildings throughout the province. Building owners are required to ensure that building construction complies with the standards. Local authorities are responsible for administration and enforcement of the standards. Local authorities include northern, rural and urban municipalities, regional park authorities, and the minister responsible for provincial parks. To deliver administration and enforcement services, local authorities set building bylaws and issue building permits, as well as appoint building officials. Building and Fire Safety does not issue building permits, perform plan reviews, complete on-site building inspections, issue product approvals, or provide equivalency approvals.
